Triumphant Trainees gain Careers in Construction

We are proud to have worked with the Prince’s Trust supporting them to help young unemployed people into careers in the building industry and delighted to announce we have found places for seven Prince’s Trust trainees on our sites across North East Wales and four have gained jobs or gone into training.

Anwyl has funded and delivered the programme with The Prince’s Trust, whose Patron is HRH The Prince of Wales, and as part of their training all seven on the Get Into Construction course earned a Level One Health and Safety Certificate and a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card which allows them to work on building sites.

Alan Parry, from Buckley, has enrolled on a course with Coleg Cambria after spending three weeks on site working with an electrical contractor and he said: “I’ve really enjoyed my placement and the opportunity to prove myself.”

James Newlands, 23, from Rhyl, and his partner Alice Murray, are moving to Oxford and his time with Anwyl has helped him earn a job there. He said:

“I was bricklaying and although I had never worked in that trade before it was really good and the B and L Brickwork team from Mold were cracking and they offered me a job too. They really helped me and I would like to try and get an apprenticeship as a bricklayer in future but for now I will be labouring and thanks to Anwyl I have the qualifications to work on a building site”

The trainees were based at Anwyl Construction’s Llys Raddington and at Anwyl Homes’ developments at Parc Aberkinsey in Rhyl, Springdale Meadows in Hawarden, and Croes Atti in Oakenholt, and at our headquarters in Ewloe.

Olivia Spence, Programme Executive at The Prince’s Trust, said: “It’s been a pleasure to work with these young people and see them overcome the barriers and it shows that if you work hard then there are rewards at the end of it.

“It’s great that we can already see them progress and develop new skills and self-confidence and Anwyl have been fantastic and very supportive for us and most importantly for the young people and I hope this partnership between them and the Trust will continue”

Tom Anwyl, Managing Director of Anwyl Construction, said:

The Prince’s Trust is a fantastic organisation to support and we’ve been delighted to be part of a programme like this which can make such a difference to young lives. The confidence I’ve seen in these trainees to take part and to move their lives forward is fantastic. There are real opportunities in construction because there is a shortage of skilled people and we really need new recruits to come forward to make careers in the industry. We have had great support from The Pennaf Housing Group, Wales & West Housing and the many sub-contractors who have welcomed the trainees onto their site teams to carry out their work experience and in several cases to offer them jobs.”
